Jay Manufacturing’s Joe Dengel, Lead Welder/Robotic Programmer, was honored with the 2015 NEW Manufacturing Alliance All Star Award.
What does your company make?
We are a full-service metal fabrication company, so we manufacture everything from individual metal parts to very large weldments.
What do you do there?
I keep the weld shop running at peak efficiency, write programs for robotic welders, train all robot operators and oversee production staff.
How did you decide on this career path?
I always wanted to learn how to weld. After high school I found a job at a company that was willing to give me on-the-job training. I enjoy building things, so I just stuck with it.
What is the most rewarding thing about your job?
Seeing the finished product, especially when I’m able to see its end use. It’s rewarding to know that I had a part in building it.
What kind of education or training do you have? What prepared you for this job?
I have an associate degree in management development from Fox Valley Technical College and robot programing certification from Miller Automation, as well as a lot of on-the-job training. All of the business classes I took help me understand the big picture.
How does your company promote teamwork?
The company promotes teamwork by recognizing the good in people and their talent. The owners and leadership of the company treat employees like a family — it’s easy to promote teamwork in that type of environment.
Are there any misconceptions about manufacturing careers?
I wish I could change the perception that all manufacturing facilities are dirty, and those working in manufacturing are unmotivated. There are many 0pportunities and many roles that individuals in entry-level positions can pursue if they’re willing to put in the effort and get the education they need.
Also nominated for the All Star Awards were employees Dustin Chapin and David Molnar.
Massive layoffs like the more than 1,500 at Oshkosh Corp. over the last two years might normally cripple the Oshkosh area’s economy.
Instead, quite the opposite has happened.

High school students were not the only ones that had the opportunity to visit Oshkosh manufacturing locations during Manufacturing month. Eighth-grade students that are currently enrolled in manufacturing engineering in the Oshkosh Area School District loaded buses and hit the manufacturing floors to learn more about… read more.

Chris Boycks (Director of Quality) & Joe Dengel (Robotic Specialist) presented on using robotic welding automation at the 2013 National Robotic Arc Welding Conference, held June 4-5 in Milwaukee, WI. They discussed insight on realization, integration, advantages and importance of owning robotic arc welding technologies. Other discussion was on arc-on time vs. air moves, touch sensing, and ROI on equipment
Conference attendees described Jay Manufacturing’s development of specific code as revolutionary. This application of robotic technology provides Jay Manufacturing with a competitive advantage in the crowded fabrication marketplace, improving an already accurate and efficient process to an even greater degree, paying dividends for clients in both quality and lead time.
